The Story of Reelfellas

Hi everyone! I'm excited to share the story behind Reelfellas.

The concept for the Reelfellas App didn't emerge from a single moment. It evolved from a collection of experiences I've had throughout my life.

Everyone needs a hobby or form of entertainment to break the monotony of everyday life and recharge. It could be anything—traveling, spending time with friends and family, reading, watching movies, taking evening walks, playing games, and more. Without something to engage in, we risk going stir-crazy.

When it comes to watching movies, I'm very selective. With my busy schedule, I don't want to waste time on a poor choice. So, I became quite picky and usually ask for recommendations from friends and family. However, this approach has its own issues, and that's where the idea began.

Not all movie suggestions work for everyone. We need to find a few people whose movie tastes align with ours

Let's assume we've found a few people whose movie tastes match ours. Everything goes well until we share a movie we love on social media, tagging our friends and fellow movie lovers. It's wonderful when they watch it and thank us, saying they enjoyed it too. However, sometimes even those with similar tastes respond with "OK," "one-time watchable," or "boring" when we describe the movie as awesome or amazing. That's when I realized:

There are only two kinds of movies: those you like and those you don't. There are no universally good or bad movies

When I love a movie, I habitually search for and read articles, reviews, and analyses about it. Sometimes it's to understand complex films like Interstellar, Dark, Platform, and Inception better. Other times, I want to learn about the crew, such as the director, screenwriter, and cinematographer, and explore their other works to add to my watchlist. Occasionally, I just want to find others who enjoyed the movie as much as I did and share the excitement. That's when I imagined:

How it would be, if there was a place where we could find articles, reviews, break-ups, and experiences of people about a movie all in one place.

With all these thoughts swirling in my mind, a turning point emerged. During the initial COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, people confined to their homes were eager to watch anything online, scouring OTT platforms for movies and series to alleviate their boredom. Within my circle, friends began seeking recommendations from me, recognizing my passion for movies through my frequent posts on social media.

As I kept recommending movies and series to numerous people, a thought struck me: why don't we have an app for this? An app where everything is consolidated in one place—from movie suggestions and like-minded movie enthusiasts to ratings, cast and crew information, write-ups, and the ability to save favorite movies and create watchlists.

And thus, ReelFellas was born.
