Privacy Policy

Reelfellas ("Reelfellas," "we," "us," or "our") operates the Reelfellas mobile app (the "App"), a social movie and TV discovery app that lets you rate titles, build a watchlist, follow friends, share posts, and get recommendations from people who share your taste. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

By using Reelfellas, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the App.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information you provide directly

Account information — name, email address, and a username, created when you sign up with email/password, Google, or Sign in with Apple.
Profile information — an optional phone number, bio, profile picture, and cover image.
Your movie preferences — the movies/shows you mark as favorites, rate, add to your watchlist, or search for.
Content you post — posts, captions, comments, likes, and any images you attach to a post.
Social connections — who you follow, who follows you, and anyone you choose to block.
Recommendations — movies/shows you recommend to other users, and any note you attach.
Support requests — anything you submit through the in-app Help / Complaint / Suggestion form, including your reason, description, and (implicitly) your account identity.
Reports — if you report a post, comment, or user for violating our guidelines, we collect the report reason and any details you provide.

1.2 Information we collect with your permission

Photos — if you choose to set a profile or cover photo, we access your photo library only for the image you select, and upload that image to our storage.
Contacts (Invite Friends) — if you use "Invite Friends," we read your device contacts' phone numbers, with your explicit permission, and send them to our servers to check which of your contacts already have a Reelfellas account. We do not store your contacts or their phone numbers. The numbers are used only to perform that one-time match and are discarded immediately after; we never share them with anyone else or use them for any other purpose. You can decline this permission and still use the rest of the App, and you can revoke it later from your device Settings.
Notifications — if you allow push notifications, we store a device push token (and your device platform) so we can deliver notifications about follows, comments, recommendations, and similar activity. You can turn notifications off at any time in Settings or your device's system settings.
Files you choose to import — the "Import Your Ratings" feature reads a single file you pick (an exported IMDb or Letterboxd CSV) to import your existing ratings and watchlist. We never access any other files on your device.

1.3 Information collected automatically

Usage information — your recent movie searches (so we can show your "Recent Search" list), and basic account activity needed to operate the App (e.g., timestamps on your posts, ratings, and comments).
Device information — device platform (iOS/Android) and a device identifier associated with your push notification token.

We do not currently use any third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and we do not collect precise location data.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information above to:

Create and manage your account, and authenticate you when you sign in.
Show your profile, posts, ratings, and watchlist to you and, where applicable, to other users (see Section 3).
Calculate "match" percentages and recommendations based on shared taste in movies/shows.
Power social features — follows, comments, likes, recommendations, and Reel Suggestions.
Match your device contacts against existing Reelfellas users, if you use Invite Friends, without storing your contacts (see 1.2).
Send push notifications you've opted into.
Fetch movie, show, cast/crew, and streaming-availability data from The Movie Database (TMDB) to power the catalog you browse (see Section 4).
Respond to support requests and enforce our Community Guidelines through content moderation (Section 5).
Maintain the security and integrity of the App, including detecting abuse and enforcing account suspensions/bans.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your data for third-party advertising.

3. How Information Is Shared

With other users — your username, profile photo, bio, favorite movies, posts, comments, and ratings are visible to other Reelfellas users according to the App's normal social features (e.g., a post you make is visible to people who can see your posts; a public profile shows your favorites and match percentage to other users). Your email, phone number, and device information are never shown to other users.
With service providers, who process data on our behalf under confidentiality obligations:
- Supabase — our database, authentication, and backend hosting provider. All the information described in Section 1 is stored on Supabase's infrastructure.
- The Movie Database (TMDB) — we query TMDB's API for movie/show metadata, artwork, and streaming availability. Your search terms may be sent to TMDB as part of that lookup; we do not send TMDB any of your account or profile information. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
- Google / Apple — if you sign in with Google or Sign in with Apple, those providers handle authentication and share your name/email with us as permitted by your settings with them.
- Push notification delivery (Expo's push service, relaying to Apple's and Google's notification services) — used only to deliver the notifications described in 1.2.
For legal reasons — we may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Reelfellas, our users, or the public.
In case of a business transfer — if Reelfellas is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction; we'll notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

We do not share your information with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

4. Third-Party Data — TMDB

Reelfellas' movie and TV catalog, artwork, cast/crew information, and streaming-availability badges are provided by The Movie Database (TMDB). This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. TMDB's own privacy practices govern any data processed on their end as part of that integration; see TMDB's own privacy policy for details.

5. Content Moderation, Reporting, and Blocking

To keep Reelfellas safe, you can report a post, comment, or user, and you can block another user at any time from their profile or post. When you block someone:

They can no longer see your posts, follow you, or interact with your content, and you no longer see theirs.
Any existing follow relationship between you is removed automatically.

Reported content that receives multiple independent reports is automatically hidden pending review. Reports you submit are visible only to you and to Reelfellas for review — they are not shared with the person you reported. Accounts that violate our Community Guidelines may be suspended or permanently banned.

6. Data Retention and Account Deletion

We retain your information for as long as your account is active, or as needed to provide the App's features.

You can permanently delete your account at any time from Settings → Close my account. Deleting your account:

Permanently deletes your profile, posts, comments, reshares, ratings, watchlist, favorites, followers/following relationships, recommendations, Reel Suggestions, blocks, reports you filed, push notification tokens, and search history.
Cannot be undone, and you will not be able to sign back into that account.

Some information may be retained in anonymized form where required for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes, consistent with this policy.

7. Your Choices and Rights

Access and update — you can view and edit most of your profile information directly in the App (Edit Profile).
Notifications — turn push notifications on/off in Settings.
Region — choose which country's streaming availability you see in Settings.
Permissions — you can grant or revoke Photos, Contacts, and Notifications access at any time from your device's system settings. Declining or revoking a permission may limit related features (e.g., you won't be able to use Invite Friends without contacts access) but won't otherwise limit your use of the App.
Delete your account — see Section 6.
Blocked users — manage who you've blocked from Settings → Blocked Users.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information (such as the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your data, or to object to certain processing). To exercise these rights, contact us using the details in Section 10.

8. Children's Privacy

Reelfellas is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll notify you through the App or by other reasonable means before the change takes effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
